Recommendations for remote access to TRIUMF

Recommendations for TRIUMF staff and visitors who are working from home during the COVID-19 outbreak and require access to TRIUMF resources. The information and level of detailed provided below will evolve as new material and guidance are developed.


These instructions and recommendation will fit most use-case scenario. If you need further assistance or instruction, we ask you to reach out to fellow work colleagues for help and assistance. If you still need assistance from the TRIUMF Computing Group, please submit your ticket to the TRIUMF Helpdesk. We will endeavor to respond as quickly as we can.

Accessing TRIUMF resources remotely using the TRIUMF VPN


      The TRIUMF VPN has been made available to everyone with a TRIDENT Account.


Guidance for Windows, MacOS and Linux desktop clients at home
  • MacOS
    • You do not need to use the TRIUMF VPN to remotely connect to your TRIUMF MacOS desktop computer from home. Use the MacOS built-in application "Screen Sharing".  You will need  to allow "Sharing" in the System Preferences on your Mac Desktop at TRIUMF first.
    • When you launch the Screen Sharing client at home, you will need to provide the hostname or IP Address of your TRIUMF MacOS Desktop
  •  Linux
    • You do not need to use the TRIUMF VPN to remotely connect to your TRIUMF Linux desktop or server from home, unless it has been put behind the TRIUMF Perimeter firewall, simply connect using ssh. If you do not establish a connection your TRIUMF linux machine is likely behind the TRIUMF perimeter firewall and you will need to install the VPN Client software for Linux


  • All voicemails left on your TRIUMF Phone extension are automatically forwarded to you as an email.
  • TRIUMF local phone numbers can be forwarded to your Cell Phone. To arrange this submit a Helpdesk ticket in the "Telephone Service request" queue.



Audio/Video Conferencing Options

If you are organizing or participating in meetings, please consider using the following  A/V options.

For meetings where all participants are TRIUMF Staff with Office 365, please use:

  • Microsoft Teams (available from the suite of software tools in O365 website)
    • Detailed Instructions will be added shortly.
  • Microsoft Skype for Business
    • Use your TRIUMF O365 credentials to login, organize or participate in a "Skype for Business" Meeting
For meetings with non TRIUMF staff please use:
  • BlueJeans (availble here)
    • If you are the meeting organizer, you can can only schedule a BlueJeans meeting if you have a BlueJeans Account. Please submit a ticket to TRIUMF Helpdesk queue "Audio and Video Conferencing" and request a BlueJeans Account if you need to organize a meeting with non TRIUMF Staff.
    • If you are not the Organizer you do not need a BlueJeans account. In this case, simply click the "Join Meeting" link that was sent to you in the email by the Organizer and follow the on-screen instructions.
