Windows Remote Desktop using SSH
Remote Desktop sessions from outside of TRIUMF now require a SSH ( Secure SHell) connection to gain access to systems within TRIUMF.
NOTE: Regular Remote Desktop access (port 3389) from outside of TRIUMF is now blocked at the TRIUMF firewall. This was applied due to security concerns. Remote Desktop without SSH will work within TRIUMF.
A small Windows application has been created to combine the normal Remote Desktop with a Secure Shell connection to a Linux server at TRIUMF. This app requires Windows XP SP3 with .NET Framework 3.5 or greater or Windows 7.
The application can be downloaded by clicking on this link - TRIUMFRDS.exe (updated Nov 21, 2011)
An account on the TRCOMP cluster is required. If you do not have such an account or have forgotten the password, do submit a request via the TRIUMF Helpdesk web site. (onsite only)
Save the application to your Windows Desktop or a folder of your choice. No installation process is required.
- Run the TRIUMFRDS.exe application.
- Enter the name of the computer
you want to "Remote Desktop" to.
- The random port number can be left as is.
- Enter your TRCOMP Cluster
username and password - see above if you don't have one.
- Click on the Connect button.
- Accept certificate requests
if prompted
- The Remote Desktop session will open. You can then enter your credentials to log into the remote computer.
You will notice that the Remote Desktop Connection panel stays open. This allows you to simultaneously connect to other hosts if necessary.
If you need to connect to another host click on the New Connection button - this will clear the hostname field and assign a new random port number yet retain your TRCOMP username and password. You are now ready to connect to another host.
When you are finished with the Remote Desktop connections, close the Remote Desktop Connection panel. This will terminate the related SSH connections.
