Installing Scientific Linux

TRIUMF Computing Services provides media for performing a kickstart installation of Scientific Linux.  It is suitable only for workstations that will not be connected to networks other than the TRIUMF wired-network. In particular it is not suitable for installing Scientific Linux on a laptop or PC that is used off-site .

Disk-partitioning and setting the root password are done interactively so it is safe to use the TRIUMF kickstart-installation on a system that has disk-partitions or logical-volumes that you wish to retain.

TRIUMF customisations

In addition to Scientific Linux packages, it installs packages (rpms) that configure the operating-system for use at TRIUMF.

Before installing, familiarise yourself with the function of each TRIUMF rpm; especially triumf-ccn-rootkey which adds an ssh key that allows TRIUMF-Computing personel to have root access to the machine on which it is installed.  This is in accordance with TRIUMF Computer-Security policy but is not required.  You may remove the package at anytime and this will remove the key.
