Linux at TRIUMF
Linux Distributions
TRIUMF Computing Services provides support for Scientifiic Linux (SL) on PCs and servers that are permanently connected to the TRIUMF network. SL is is based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux so has the same life-cycle. It provides a stable platform with bug-fix and security updates for at least seven years from the initial release.
The long release-cycle means that SL may not be compatible with hardware that has been available for less than six months. Also, many software packages are often several versions behind those available in distributions that are updated more frequently. For those for which these issues are a serious drawback, TRIUMF provides some of its custom packages for Fedora Linux.
Hardware
When purchasing hardware for a Linux system, consult TRIUMF recommended PC-hardware for the status of compatibility with Scientific Linux.
Installation
TRIUMF provides a bootable CD for installing SL on a workstation (PC) at TRIUMF. It does an almost everything install of Scientific Linux and customises the installation for use at TRIUMF.
